A little history about the word 'balustrade'; which is a row of small columns topped with a rail: quite like a handrail, fence or banister. Traditionally, it would be made of stone in the classic spherical style but is now made from a variety of materials. They are made up of balusters (small columns) and the name was coined in 17th century Italy, as the bulbous style has close resemblance to the blossoming pomegranate flowers named balaustra!
