What is Portal Frame Construction?

23 May 2019

Consisting of horizontal or pitched rafters (beams) with supporting columns at either end and connected by rigid, moment-resisting connections, Portal Frames, renowned for their structural efficiency and versatility, are ideal for low-rise industrial, retail, storage warehouses, entertainment and sports venues. They are usually constructed from steel with reinforced concrete, and due to their simplistic nature and low use of materials, can be assembled at a lower cost.

Portal Frames were first introduced during World War 2 and grew in popularity during the 1960s.

Thorndell Engineering worked in partnership with family-run Doncaster-based construction company, PS Construction to design, manufacture and install five Portal Frame Constructions to be used as industrial units.

Utilising design drawings from our client, we supplied and manufactured all the structural steelwork from our Doncaster-based workshops, and used our team of highly skilled fitters to install the structure with the added assistance from 35 ft cranes and cherry pickers.

All works carried out under our CE Marking Accreditation are meticulously planned and executed, adhering rigorously to schedules and completed on time with zero delays or defects.
