A little history about the word 'balustrade', which is a row of small columns topped with a rail, quite like a handrail, fence or bannister. Traditionally, it would be made of stone in the classic spherical style, but it is now made from a variety of materials. They are made up of balusters (small columns), and the name was coined in 17th-century Italy, as the bulbous style has a close resemblance to the blossoming pomegranate flowers called balaustra!
